Industrial Bearing Replacement Guide: Model, Suffix and Equivalent Options
When a bearing needs replacement, the basic number is only the starting point. The full designation, suffix, dimensions, clearance, sealing arrangement and actual application determine whether an alternative can be used safely. This guide helps maintenance teams, distributors and purchasing managers prepare an accurate bearing inquiry.
1. Read the complete bearing designation
Send the complete marking from the bearing ring, package or drawing. A suffix may specify internal clearance such as C3 or C4, seals or shields such as 2RS or ZZ, cage material, precision, preload, matched-set arrangement, insulation, lubrication, temperature capability or another special internal design. “6208 SKF” is not enough when reliable replacement is important.
2. Confirm dimensions and bearing type
Check bore × outside diameter × width, then confirm the bearing family: deep groove ball, angular contact, cylindrical roller, spherical roller, tapered roller, thrust or needle roller. Also state row arrangement, load direction, mounting fit, speed, temperature, lubrication and whether the bearing runs in an electric motor, gearbox, spindle, pump or another application.
3. Why the suffix can change the result
Two bearings can share the same main dimensions but perform differently. A C3 clearance bearing may be selected for temperature growth in an electric motor; replacing it with normal clearance may cause incorrect running conditions. A 2RS sealed bearing cannot automatically be substituted by an open bearing. Precision, preload, insulated coating and cage design are especially important in machine-tool and high-speed service.
4. How to assess an equivalent option
An equivalent option should be discussed only after the technical requirements are compared. For general industrial service, FONKIN can help check acceptable branded-reference or alternative supply options. For high-speed, high-precision, insulated, matched-set or safety-critical applications, confirm the drawing, data sheet and original design requirement before approving a substitute.
5. Send these details for a faster quote

Complete model and suffix; required brand or approval for an equivalent; quantity and required delivery date; photo of the bearing marking, box label or drawing; equipment/application and operating conditions; destination country and preferred shipping method.

Buying checklist before placing an order
Check the full designation, dimensions, brand requirement, source, delivery commitment and packaging condition. Where an alternative is proposed, ask what technical points were compared and ensure the option is suitable for the application. This avoids returns, downtime and incorrect spare-part purchasing.
FAQ
Can C3 be replaced with normal clearance? Not automatically. Clearance affects temperature and internal load and must be checked.
Can another brand with the same basic number be used? Not automatically. Compare the full designation, precision and application duty.
What is the fastest way to identify an old bearing? Send clear photos of ring markings, package labels, installation position and measured dimensions.
How can FONKIN help? FONKIN supports industrial buyers with bearing identification, branded-reference sourcing and technically checked alternative comparison. Send the details above for a practical quotation route.
