TC Oil Seal Selection Guide: Size, Material and Replacement Checklist
A TC oil seal is a radial shaft seal commonly used in gearboxes, pumps, motors, reducers, agricultural machinery and general industrial equipment. It is easy to buy a seal that matches the nominal size, but size alone does not guarantee reliable sealing. Before ordering a replacement, compare the complete specification: inside diameter, outside diameter, width, lip profile, material, operating medium and shaft condition.
1. Confirm the size correctly
State the seal as ID × OD × width in millimetres, for example 85 × 105 × 7.5 mm. If the marking is unclear, provide a photo of both faces, the shaft diameter and the housing bore. When measuring an old seal, clean the part first and avoid relying on a distorted used lip.
2. Understand the TC profile
TC commonly refers to a rubber-covered radial shaft seal with a spring-loaded main sealing lip and an auxiliary dust lip. The main lip retains lubricant; the dust lip helps limit ingress of dust and light contamination. Supplier naming conventions can differ, so buyers should compare the real cross-section or a clear photo rather than treating a two-letter code as a complete technical specification.
3. Choose the material for the application
NBR is normally suitable for many mineral-oil and grease applications at moderate temperature. FKM is often considered where heat resistance, chemical resistance or more demanding media are involved. The correct choice depends on actual fluid, continuous temperature, pressure, shaft speed, dust or water exposure, and installation location.
4. Inspect the shaft and housing
A new oil seal may leak early when the shaft has a groove, corrosion, burrs, excessive runout or poor surface finish. Check the running track, shaft chamfer, housing cleanliness, alignment and installation depth. Protect the lip from sharp keyways or splines during installation and apply suitable lubricant to the lip.
5. Information required for a fast quotation
Complete marking or type such as TC; ID × OD × width; NBR or FKM requirement if known; equipment and application; working fluid, temperature and shaft speed where available; quantity and destination country; clear photos of the old seal, shaft and packaging.

Replacement buying checklist
Before approving an alternative, compare sealing lip design, spring arrangement, material, dimensions, application duty and delivery requirement. If the seal is used in unusual chemicals, high temperature, high speed or pressure service, send operating details for technical review rather than ordering by size only.

FAQ
Can I select an oil seal by size only? No. Size is essential, but material, lip profile and operating conditions also determine service life.
When should FKM be considered? Where the actual medium or temperature requires better heat or chemical resistance; confirm the duty before selection.
